SWEET LADY MARY

(P. Assirati)

Listening to a lot of Richie Havens with his open sweeping tunings gave it its feel. The lyrics tell a story of the mundane meeting which changes your life’s path, ending down by the river with everything being washed and wished away.

I don’t believe there’s a next time
But I believe there’s a place
Wounded by heaven, blinded by love
When you first fell my way

I don’t believe there’s an answer
But I believe there’s a way
My best book of poems
My scraps and my scrawlings
All written for the day

What I was looking for was gone
What I was chasing was wrong
I was lost and alone, I was far away from home
Until you took me down to the river
And I let my sin float away

Sweet Lady Mary came calling
Then she turned and walked away
Her smile and her boot heels
And her long hair was falling
I couldn’t think of anything to say…
