NO DISTANCE

(P. Assirati)

Its been around for years, it was one of the original 10 songs I recorded which led to the formation of The Rivermen. We finally found a structure by using lots of major and minor 7ths and a capo-ed of 12 string. We took lots out and added Tony Cosaitis’ Fender Rhodes style keys. 25 years in the making……

Straight lines and green lights and absence lights this light
I’m broken in two for the price of a call
Bright coloured hoardings and dockyards and skylines
The first kiss, a promise says ‘No distance breaks this line’

Cliff tops and benches, parks, poems and stars
Radios, valentines, waiting for hours
Late nights in harbours, bus stations and scars
The first kiss on parting says ‘No distance breaks this line’

She moved into the east of my town
After years of waiting and wanting and doubt
Behind that locked door through sharp acid air
Comes anticipation, love and despair

When she spoke, she spoke of travel
When she left I stayed behind with just a photo
Just a shadow of what once was never mine
She didn’t say that it was over, when she left I saw the sign
Her last words on parting were ‘No distance breaks this line’
